IMPACT

Outside of the concert hall, the OSPR actively supports music education as an engine of social change.

Through programs such as the Educational Program Get to Know Your Orchestra (PEDCO), educational conferences are offered to students of public and private schools in order to promote interest in music and symphonic instruments. Since its creation in 1993, PEDCO has served more than 60,000 Puerto Rican students. Also, this season launched the new Educational Concerts for public schools (hyperlink) to provide low-income students with a musical experience that contributes to their cultural development. Moreover, to strengthen the bond of our youth with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. In the past six months, the program has impacted 2,000 students. The Orchestra also organizes the program Symphonic Experience (hyperlink), which provides young musicians with the unique opportunity to study with the orchestra musicians and perform in concert with the OSPR. Through this program, we aspire to motivate young musicians to continue their studies in the field of music. Since its creation in 2007, Symphonic Experience has served more than 1,900 music students.

Integrated Community Services (SIC)

Integrated Community Services (SIC) - The SIC is an individualized and joint teaching program at the Inocencio Montero School in Utuado. The objectives of the program are:

  • Use music as an instrument of prevention for social transformation.

  • Contribute to the development of anti-dropout strategies.

  • Promote integration, interaction, fellowship, harmony, and solidarity.

  • Promote the development of skills such as conflict management, discipline, responsibility, and teamwork, among others.

  • Discover, identify, and develop musical talent and skills in the participants, presenting music as a possible profession.

Currently, SIC employs six professionals in the field of music. The Ángel Ramos Foundation previously subsidized SIC.

Symphonic Experience

Due to our access to the higher caliber musicians and resources, we can offer extraordinary opportunities to music students for their musical development and professionalization through the Symphonic Experience Program. Via direct workshops and performance opportunities with the OSPR, we allow a space where they can enhance their repertoire knowledge. Furthermore, we can offer students catalytic experiences for the optimization and refinement of their performing skills. The program also holds a young soloist’s competition, through which the winners perform at the closing concert with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra at the Pablo Casals Symphony Hall.

Educational Concerts for public schools

As part of our educational mission, we strive to provide students accessible experiences that contribute to their cultural development. Also, it is our goal to strengthen the bond of our youth with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. Therefore, the initiative to present exclusive concerts for public school students arises. The programming of these concerts aims to reinforce the cultural values of youth while creating a link between them and the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra (OSPR). These concerts have a $ 1.00 fee per student, making attendance more accessible.

The first edition of these concerts was made possible in collaboration with the Puerto Rico Department of Education.

Traditional Three Kings Holiday Concert

The Traditional Three Kings Holiday Concert has been part of our concert season for 20 years. Since its first edition in 2000, it has been a favorite of our public. In addition to the classical repertoire, audiences can enjoy our traditional Christmas music while allowing talented young musicians to perform as soloists alongside the orchestra. Currently, many of the participants who started this tradition two decades ago are professional musicians. Some of them are part of the OSPR, such as our concertmaster assistant Francisco Jiménez and double bass principal assistant Andrés Almodóvar.

Pablo Casals Museum

Since its inauguration on June 21, 1977, the Pablo Casals Museum has been the custodian of Pablo Casals memorabilia. Casal’s concert recordings as soloist and director are among the invaluable relics. Also, it houses the maestro’s most important manuscripts, his piano, medals of honor, and additional audiovisual material that documents Casals' musical career.

Your Symphony, for the people

This concert tour created having as its center the development and dissemination of the classical musical heritage, in order to reaffirm the importance of accessibility to the classical arts. During the 2019-2020 season, the concert series had a total impact of approximately 7,000 people. The OSPR performed in Cataño, Arroyo, Juana Díaz, Ponce, San Juan, Aibonito, Rincón, and Toa Baja.

Your Symphony for the south

This initiative was inspired in solidarity with the towns in the southwest of Puerto Rico, who were affected by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake registered on January 7, 2020. An outdoor free concert was held at the Fine Arts Center in San Juan, where a collection center was set up to gather essential items for people affected by the earthquakes. The collection of supplies exceeded our expectations, thus leading two trucks of supplies to be delivered directly by musicians and OSPR personnel in various communities of Yauco and Guayanilla.

With this concert tour, the Symphony Orchestra reaffirms its commitment to the development and dissemination of the classical musical heritage. We want people around the Island to have the opportunity to enjoy this experience, and thanks to this initiative, it was possible.

Music transforms

This project was born as a result of the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. It consisted of mobilizing the OSPR to Housing Projects, plazas, stadiums, and refugee shelters. Its purpose was to axiomatically impact the spirit of our society through our universal language: music. The project started in San Juan and toured various towns such as Utuado, Ponce, Toa Baja, Caguas, among others, totaling 25 free concerts.
